An Assortment
Filed Under aggie stuff, bradley, dogs, ferrets, huckleberry finn, school, website stuff | 2 Comments

Huckleberry Finn has become my (fuzzy, spastic) shadow as of late. He is much nicer this semester and has decided that he rather quite likes me. Mostly he likes it when I play with him, which usually involves me tickling his belly and him running away and then coming back to loiter nonchalantly by my feet, acting as though he is just casually strolling by but does NOT want a belly tickle. This process repeats endlessly.
When I walk from room to room I hear the sounds of a little weasel galloping along behind me.

I appreciate this new-found affection a lot more than I appreciated his previous habit of nipping toes.

The problems with my blog are now fixed! You can now see individual entries, make comments, etc.
Many thanks to the nice folks at Start Logic, the hosting company I use, for taking the time to figure out what the heck I was babbling on about. Turns out it was a simple fix, but one that would have taken me ages to figure out on my own.
Also, turns out I probably caused it in the first place. That’s how I roll.

Homecoming Weekend has officially started! Tomorrow morning is an early one, as I’m going to the university farm to help prepare the annual Homecoming Breakfast for current students and alumni.
I leave from there to go to the parade, in which our sorority has a float along with the ag fraternity.
After that is our sorority’s softball game with our alumni against the ag fraternity.
And after THAT is a dinner with sorority alumni.

I realized that in the last entry it looked like Bradley’s old bed was an old towel and his new bed was the navy dog bed underneath. In reality, the navy bed underneath is the old one and there is ANOTHER dog bed (a GREEN one, which I explained to him in hopes of some appreciation, but to no avail) under there. He nearly has it matted down to an acceptable condition.

A Dog’s Life
Filed Under bradley, dogs | Leave a Comment

Life is tough.
You know why they call it “A Dog’s Life?” Because it is wretched. And tough. Like the life of a dog.
Take this dog, for instance. His owner had the gall to buy him a new bed when he was perfectly happy with the old one. The new bed was too soft and fluffy.
So he refused to lay on it until his deceitful owner cleverly hid his new bed under his old bed.
It was still too soft and fluffy, so the dog had to dramatically demonstrate this fact by laying on only part of it, because the rest of it SUCKED. A LOT. Just like EVERYTHING ELSE in his life.

It’s a dog’s life.

What the…? Site troubles…
Filed Under website stuff | Leave a Comment
I just now noticed that when you try to comment on my blog entries or when you try to go to individual pages for entries, all you pull up is a blank page.
I’m not sure about the hows, whys or wherefores. Something about a database maybe? Something involving a blog on the internet, I assume?
I’m working to fix it.

Wrapping Up

I called Lil approximately 10 seconds after pushing the button to post that last entry.
“I wrote a blog post about you,” I said smugly.
“Oh, GREAT,” was her reply.
And I don’t want you to be confused into thinking she said it enthusiastically, because she did not. It was not an excited “Oh great!” It was more along the lines of when you’re running late and on the way out to the car you step in a pile of dog poo and you say, “Ohhh GREAT.”
Anyhoo.
Today I received an email from my college, gently prompting me to apply for graduation (I know, Mom! I’m totally going to do it… soon… ish…). The general tone of the email wasn’t desperate, per se, but it was pretty hard not to get the hint. It kind of read like so:
Dear Kalin,
It’s not that we WANT you to leave. We’ve really enjoyed having you hereand collecting your tuition. But uh, it’s getting to be that time… It’s just, you’ve been here for… well, you’ve been here for a while… So, you know. Butterfly from the cocoon… baby bird leaving the nest… Get it?
Oh, GREAT.

(Bad) Apples
Filed Under family, sisters | Leave a Comment

Mmmm, there’s nothing quite like fresh, home-grown apples in the fall. Especially if they’ve got thick covering of delicious, buttery caramel. But, uh, they’re good even if they’re “healthy” or whatever.
I’ve been anxiously awaiting our annual Apple Day, which consists of my family and I gather up lots of apples and running them through an old fashioned cider press to make delicious home-made cider. Well, it’s not really delicious, because we don’t cut out the bad parts of the apples. But it’s definitely home-made!
Two weeks ago was supposed to be Apple Day, but Lil canceled it for some reason. This weekend was also supposed to be Apple Day, but Lil canceled it again. Why did Lil cancel it? I don’t know. Why don’t I know? Because she refuses to answer my calls and even though I’ve been home the past TWO (2) weekends, I haven’t seen her once because she’s too busy ditching me.
I know what you’re wondering:
1) Is that Lil really as awful as she seems?
2) Did Kalin really just use a potentially legitimate blog post about apples and cider for the sole purpose of harassing and publicly calling out her sister?
Answers are as follows:
1) Yes
2) Yes

Going the Distance

Does anyone else hate extended periods of night driving?
It’s just too exhausting. I made the 5 hour journey home and my eyes feel all gooey from staring into oncoming headlights. Why do they make headlights so bright these days?
My last class on Friday gets over at 4:20PM. I know! Wah wah! Wah wah! Terrible schedule alert! But that’s what happens when there’s only one section of a class that you must take to graduate and it’s your last semester… no wiggle room. And I am all about the wiggle room, as evidenced by every other semester I’ve ever taken where I took 12ish hours because I HAD to drop a class every time in order to get the wiggle room.
By the way, this is a sneak preview of my self-help book: How To Extend the College Experience to Over Four Years. I’m giving this little taste to you for free!
I was talking to a guy in my ag techniques class the other day. We were introducing ourselves since we’d never actually talked before, and since we were the last two waiting to run the baler it seemed like a good time to make small talk. He asked what year in school I was and when I told him I was a super senior he said, “Ah, going for the victory lap, eh?” That’s one of the nicer ways I’ve heard it put.

Hello, old friends!
Filed Under aggie stuff, horses, masterpiece | Leave a Comment
I enjoyed reading The Cotton Wife’s recent post about their soybean fields.
Because, first of all, does anyone remember how much I love soybeans?
But it also reminded me of pictures I took this past weekend.

Pseudo Fall is gone and Real Fall is here. In the background of this picture, you can see the bright gold soybean field and in the distance is… anyone? Anyone have any guesses? Yes! Corn.

Ah, soybeans. And corn, of course.

They’re getting pretty dang near ready to harvest.

I don’t only take pictures of soybeans, of course. “Don’t rest on your laurels,” that’s what I always say. You’ve got to mix it up… keep it fresh!

I bet you weren’t expecting this twist, eh? Kalin taking pictures of horses? Unheard of! It’s my goal to keep you on your toes.
